What Is Dysport?

Dysport is an injectable neuromodulator made with abobotulinumtoxinA. It temporarily reduces the nerve signals that cause selected facial muscles to contract. As those muscles relax, the skin above them appears smoother.

Dysport is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults younger than 65. These vertical creases, also called glabellar lines or “11s,” develop through repeated movements such as frowning, concentrating, or squinting.

What Concerns Can Dysport Address?

Dysport is best suited for dynamic wrinkles, which appear or deepen when the face moves. Depending on your anatomy and treatment plan, an experienced injector may use a neuromodulator in several areas.

Common treatment areas may include:

• Frown lines between the eyebrows
• Horizontal forehead lines
• Crow’s feet around the eyes
• Bunny lines along the nose
• A dimpled or uneven chin

Only the treatment of glabellar lines is FDA-approved for cosmetic use of Dysport in the United States. Treatment in other facial areas is considered off-label and should be recommended only after a personal assessment.

Dysport may be preventative and corrective wrinkle-relaxer treatments intended to slow the development of deeper lines or soften wrinkles that are already visible. You may be a candidate if you:

Tell your injector about your medical history, medications, allergies, previous injectable treatments, and any muscle or nerve conditions. Dysport should not be injected into an area with an active infection, and it may not be appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What Happens During a Dysport Appointment?

Your visit begins with a consultation. Your injector will ask what concerns you, examine your features at rest and in motion, and review your previous experience with wrinkle relaxers.

Once the treatment plan is established, the skin is cleansed, and a fine needle is used to place small amounts of Dysport into selected muscles. Most patients describe the injections as brief pinches. The appointment is typically efficient, and numbing medication is not usually necessary.

The number of injections and units will depend on your anatomy and the areas being treated. Dysport units are specific to the product and cannot be directly compared or converted to Botox® or another neuromodulator.

Recovery and Dysport Results

Dysport requires little to no downtime. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising can occur around the injection sites, but these effects are generally mild.

Most patients can return to their regular schedule after leaving the office. Your injector will provide specific aftercare instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous exercise, rubbing the treated areas, or lying flat for a short period.

Improvement may begin within two to three days, although individual response times vary. The effect continues to develop as the treated muscles relax. Results commonly last several months, and repeat appointments can help maintain a smooth, consistent appearance.

Dysport vs. Botox

Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin type A neuromodulators, but they have different formulations, dosing systems, and treatment characteristics. One is not automatically better than the other. Factors such as the treatment area, muscle strength, previous results, and desired degree of movement can influence which product your injector recommends. 

Neuromodulators primarily address lines caused by muscle movement. They do not restore lost facial volume or physically lift loose tissue, which is why neuromodulators, fillers, and PDO threads address different aesthetic concerns. Some patients may benefit from combining treatments, but each recommendation should be based on a personal evaluation.
