One of the top researched questions by consumers is “what is the difference between preventative and corrective Botox?” and “when should I start Botox?”. If this sounds like your search history – you are in the right place!
What is Botox?
Botox is a brand name — like how we say “Kleenex” for tissue. The actual substance is called botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein derived from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. That sounds alarming, but here’s the key: in its cosmetic form, it’s used in tiny, highly controlled doses that are completely safe.
When injected into a specific muscle, Botox temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell that muscle to contract. No contraction = no wrinkle forming. It doesn’t fill anything in or change your bone structure — it simply relaxes the muscle underneath.
What Can Botox Treat?
Most people think of Botox purely as a wrinkle treatment, but its uses go much further. Common areas we treat in our clinic include:
- Forehead Lines & Frown Lines
- Crow’s Feet
- Brow Lift
- Jowling/Jawline
- Neck Bands and Necklace Lines
- Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
- Migraines & Teeth Grinding
What is Preventative Botox?
Preventative Botox is used before wrinkles form permanently. The idea is to relax muscles repeatedly over time so they never “train” the skin into deep creases. It’s typically started in the late 20s to early 30s, uses fewer units (lower cost), and targets areas where you’re starting to see faint expression lines — forehead, between the brows, around the eyes. The goal is to stay ahead of the aging process. If you are beginning to see static lines on your face, it may be time to start treating with Botox and may also indicate a skincare regimen revamp!
What is Corrective Botox?
Corrective Botox addresses wrinkles that are already there — lines visible even at rest, not just when you’re making an expression. These are called static wrinkles, and they’ve developed from years of repeated muscle movement plus collagen loss over time. Corrective treatment requires more product, may need to be combined with fillers or skin resurfacing for best results, and takes longer to see full improvement.
When should you start Botox treatments?
Age isn’t the only factor. Sun exposure, smoking, genetics, and skin type all affect when corrective treatment becomes relevant.
In short, if you are beginning to see static lines on your face, it may be time to start treating with Botox and may also indicate a skincare regimen revamp!
